Welcome to The People Behind the Programs, a blog series celebrating the voices, stories, and impact of the community professionals powering connection and belonging across the globe.
Today, we meet Simangele Mabena, Founder and CEO of Valor Strategy Consulting based in beautiful Vancouver, Canada. She's also the Chapter Director of CMX Connect in Vancouver, where she’s building a local community of community builders powered by CMX.
Simangele’s path into community work was anything but conventional — shaped by her love for research, her experience in academia, and her deep belief in the power of meaningful human connection. Let’s hear her story in her own words.
How It Started
During my PhD studies, I discovered a passion for research, which honed my skills in asking questions, identifying patterns, and seeking out answers. However, academia could often feel isolating, and I craved a career path where I could use my skills interpersonally. I found that I was naturally drawn to community work during my studies, whether mentoring, organizing alumni events, or simply creating spaces for growth and connection. Those interactions filled me with energy and joy, making me realize that community building was more than a hobby—it was a calling.
Transitioning from academia, I stepped into the vibrant world of community and discovered a perfect balance. I now get to use my background in research while actively engaging in the work I adore—helping people discover their sense of purpose in shared spaces. To me, that is the essence of community.
A Day in the Life
Currently, I reside in Vancouver, Canada, immersed in the thrilling yet challenging task of building a community from scratch. My days are diverse, often starting with research—learning about current happenings in the city, upcoming events, and ways to connect with like-minded individuals. I firmly believe in the importance of attending events in person, allowing people to see me as more than just a digital persona.
Other days are dedicated to conversations. I reach out to community professionals across various industries, setting up coffee meetups to exchange ideas and explore collaboration opportunities. Naturally, there's also the necessary administrative work—emails, scheduling, and planning—which all contribute to the grander mission of fostering a welcoming and thriving community space.
No two days are the same, but the common thread is always the people. Whether through research, events, or casual coffee chats, my focus remains on creating a community where everyone feels acknowledged and valued.
The Tools that Power My Work
My everyday community-building efforts heavily rely on Google Suite. Though it may seem basic, its capabilities in organizing and collaboration are invaluable. Google Docs helps me share ideas and gather feedback from collaborators. Google Sheets allows for effective tracking of contacts and events, ensuring no detail is overlooked. With Google Calendar, I manage my schedules, whether for meetings or community events, maintaining a clear view of my activities.
I also make frequent use of Google Forms for quick feedback on event preferences or topics of interest. Google Drive ties everything together, ensuring I have easy access and the ability to share files effortlessly. Its collaborative nature enables instant co-authoring, making it ideal for community work where connection is key.
Advice for Newcomers
For those venturing into the community industry, my advice is to immerse yourself in as many different communities as possible. Engage with them, observe your feelings, and note what is effective or inspiring. Each community has its unique rhythm, and experiencing this variety will clarify your own values and professional goals.
Understand that there’s no one-size-fits-all approach in community work—what suits one may not suit another. The real magic happens when you align with a community approach that resonates both personally and professionally. This journey of discovery is continually teaching me about my priorities and the impact I wish to have on others.
My encouragement is to explore fearlessly and not rush the journey. Each interaction, conversation, and small project adds to your learning. Continue to learn, be present, and trust the process.
Resources I Suggest
For those interested in deepening their understanding of community dynamics, I recommend "Irreplaceable" by Kevin Ervin Kelley. This book delves into how spaces, like offices and parks, foster connections through their design, offering practical insights for those looking to create welcoming environments.
Additionally, the "Talking Gardens" podcast, featuring Monty Don and other gardeners, mirrors the growth and care required in community building. It emphasizes patience and small nurturing actions—essential lessons for anyone committed to fostering community connections.
Both of these resources highlight the importance of connection and care, whether regarding physical spaces or community gardens, underscoring what makes communities strong.
💬 Let’s connect on LinkedIn — I’d love to hear from fellow community builders.
